On the afternoon of May 19, Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh officially ordered the commencement of the expansion project for Terminal 2 at Noi Bai International Airport with a total investment of nearly 5,000 billion VND.

According to the overall planning for airports in the period of 2021-2030 and vision to 2050, by 2030, Noi Bai International Airport is expected to handle 60 million passengers per year, and by 2050, this number is projected to exceed 100 million passengers per year. However, Terminal 2, which started operations in 2015 with a capacity of 10 million passengers, reached full capacity by 2018. Therefore, the expansion project is essential and cannot be delayed to address the overloading situation.

Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, the Prime Minister acknowledged and praised the efforts of ministries and sectors, especially the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV), for proactively coordinating to resolve difficult land procedures and successfully completing many important airport projects in the past two years. These projects include the ongoing construction of Long Thanh International Airport and Terminal 3 at Tan Son Nhat Airport. Despite mobilizing legal capital of 5,000 billion VND for these projects, ACV has also allocated funds to build Terminal 2 at Noi Bai Airport, increasing its capacity to 30 million passengers per year with the ability to serve 40 million passengers per year.

The expansion project of Terminal 2 at Noi Bai Airport is being studied and constructed within an area of approximately 412,203m2 (including existing and expanded areas), with the goal of increasing the operational capacity from 10 million passengers per year to 15 million passengers per year.

The project consists of two parts: expanding the terminal and auxiliary works including expanding the West wing, East wing, and central area; construction from structure to architectural completion, mechanical and electrical installation, and addition of tunnel systems; renovation and conversion of functions inside the existing terminal from the 1st to the 4th floor to enhance the operational capacity of the aviation line.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Mr. Lai Xuan Thanh, Chairman of the Board of Directors of ACV, affirmed that ACV is committed to concentrating all resources to implement the contract package ensuring safety, quality, and exceeding the progress before December 31, 2025, to meet the conditions for registering the project for inauguration and operation to welcome the 14th National Party Congress.

The construction, supply, and installation contract package will be carried out by the consortium of contractors Viet Bac (Vinaconex Corporation, Hanoi Construction Corporation, and Xuan Mai Investment and Construction Corporation). They will focus on manpower, equipment, and apply a comprehensive professional management system, striving to overcome all challenges, complete the project on schedule, ensure quality, security, and labor safety during the construction process.
