Noi Bai International Airport Fully Prepared for Peak Holiday Travel on April 30 – May 1 with Surge in Passenger Volume
Significant Increase in Passenger and Flight Volume
During this year’s Reunification Day (April 30) and International Labor Day (May 1) holiday, Noi Bai International Airport anticipates a substantial increase in both domestic and international flights and passenger traffic. On the peak day, the airport is expected to serve approximately 108,000 passengers—including 44,000 international and 64,000 domestic passengers—representing a 22% increase over regular days and a 25% increase compared to the same period last year. There will be 602 flight movements (277 international and 325 domestic), marking a 12% rise from normal operations and an 18% year-on-year increase.
The busiest pre-holiday day, April 29, is expected to experience seven peak time slots, with over 2,000 passengers per peak hour. Post-holiday, May 4 is projected to have three peak periods, also exceeding 2,000 passengers per hour. Notably, all peak-hour traffic remains within the airport’s designed capacity.
Airline Network Expansion Fuels Growth
In the first four months of the year, four international carriers (Airasia Cambodia, 9 Air, Xiamen Airlines, Lucky Air) have launched new routes to/from Noi Bai, alongside one domestic airline introducing three new routes connecting Hanoi with cities in China. This has driven strong international passenger growth, now averaging over 40,000 international passengers per day.
Comprehensive Preparedness for Safe and Efficient Operations
Noi Bai Airport has meticulously prepared a detailed operational plan, broken down by period and time slot, to ensure readiness in personnel, equipment, and vehicles. Special focus has been placed on high-traffic areas during peak hours such as baggage claim belts, security checkpoints, parking areas, and terminal access lanes, with corresponding resource allocation. Additionally, the airport has enhanced coordination with relevant authorities to swiftly handle any arising issues.
Highlight: Implementation of Biometric Check-in with VNeID
A key highlight this holiday season is Noi Bai’s collaboration with the Ministry of Public Security and airlines Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air to pilot biometric authentication using the VNeID platform for domestic flights.
The airport has installed biometric systems at 5 security checkpoints and 15 boarding gates in Terminal T1, enabling passengers of Vietnam Airlines and Vietjet Air to complete security and boarding procedures using facial recognition via VNeID. This system significantly reduces processing time, eases pressure at security areas, improves throughput, and enhances the overall passenger experience. The official implementation timeline will be announced once all preparations are completed.
Important Notes for Passengers
To avoid delays or missed flights, passengers are advised to:
-
Check travel documents carefully to ensure they are valid.
-
Arrive at the airport early—at least 2 hours before domestic flights and 3 hours before international flights.
-
Review airline baggage regulations, avoid carrying prohibited items, and pay attention to rules regarding lithium battery transportation.
-
Proceed promptly through security and boarding steps after check-in.
-
For domestic travelers flying with Vietnam Airlines or Vietjet Air: ensure you have a Level 2 VNeID account, update to the latest version of the VNeID and airline apps to experience facial biometric check-in at security and boarding points.
