Noi Bai International Airport (NIA) is a civil-military airport, with the civilian area located to the south and the military area to the north of the runway. NIA is permitted to receive regular and irregular flights, private aircraft, and operates 24 hours a day.

Established on February 28, 1977, by Decision No. 239/QD-TC issued by the Civil Aviation Administration of Vietnam, Noi Bai International Airport was built to meet domestic and international transportation needs and contribute to the post-war reconstruction and the realization of Vietnam's strategic missions in building socialism and defending the socialist homeland.

Noi Bai International Airport serves as the important aviation gateway to the capital city of Hanoi and holds a significant and advantageous economic, political, and geographic position. It serves as an ideal hub in air routes from Europe, South Asia to Southeast Asia, Northeast Asia, and the Asia-Pacific region—a region with great potential for development. Additionally, the airport benefits from a moderate climate in the Northern region and is surrounded by many attractive tourist destinations. These factors create both investment opportunities and a major competitive advantage in the region, aiming to develop Noi Bai International Airport into a commercial airport and an international air transit hub. Over nearly 50 years of construction and development, Noi Bai International Airport has overcome numerous difficulties and challenges. Generations of dedicated officials, soldiers, and employees have contributed their youth, intellect, and even their lives to build the airport step by step—from nothing to existence, from small to large, from rudimentary to modern. It transformed from a heavily damaged military airport during the war, with poor and outdated infrastructure, to a modern and sophisticated international airport. From a temporary terminal consisting of makeshift buildings, it has evolved into Passenger Terminal 1 (T1) and Terminal 2 (T2) equipped with advanced technology, a synchronized investment in equipment, and a continuous modernization process to serve millions of passengers annually.

Since its establishment, Noi Bai International Airport has made significant contributions to the construction of socialism and the development of the aviation industry. Each milestone in the airport's development is closely linked to the progress of the Vietnamese revolution and the growth of Vietnam's civil aviation sector. These achievements were recognized by the State with the awarding of the First-Class Victory Medal and the Third-Class Labor Medal in 1995, the Second-Class Labor Medal in 1999, and the First-Class Labor Medal in 2005.

Since 2012, Noi Bai International Airport has officially been a member unit under the management of the Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV).
